29 April 1559
Parliament passes the Acts of Uniformity and Supremacy, establishing Elizabeth I as the 'supreme governor' of the Church of England. It also forms the basis for a compromise between evangelical Protestantism and mild Catholic beliefs, which is codified in the 39 Articles of 1571. The resulting Anglican Church settlement achieves a good degree of consensus in Elizabeth's reign. |
