10 July 1553
Lady Jane Grey proclaimed Queen

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

In an attempt to prevent a Catholic revival, Edward VI switched the succession from his half-sister Princess Mary to his Protestant cousin Lady Jane Grey shortly before his death. Lady Jane is hastily married by the lord president, the duke of Northumberland to his son Guildford Dudley. The English people, however, resent this violation of the principle of hereditary succession and support Mary. Lady Jane Grey reigns for little more than a fortnight, and is executed on 12 February 1554.
