23 September 1548
Edward VI proclaims the setting up of a commission to prepare The Book of Common Prayer. The Act of Uniformity of March 1549 orders the exclusive use of the prayer book, which includes services, sacraments and psalms. Compiled by Thomas Cranmer, and introduced by Lord Protector Somerset, this marks a decisive shift to Protestantism in England. Although modified in 1552 and 1559, the prayer book forms the basis of the Anglican Church until the 20th century. |
