10 September 1547
An English army led by Lord Protector Somerset beats the Scots at Pinkie Cleugh, near Edinburgh. The Scots had rejected a proposal for a marriage between Edward, the young king of England, and the infant Mary Queen of Scots, and had formed an alliance with France. Although the Scottish army is larger, superior cavalry gives Somerset the victory, although the marriage never takes place. |
