18 June 1541
Henry VIII proclaimed king of Ireland

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

In the aftermath of the English Reformation, the Irish parliament recognises Henry VIII not as lord of Ireland in the traditional way, but as king of Ireland and head of the Irish Church. This signifies the end of limited royal involvement in Ireland, and heralds the establishment of a unified country governed from Dublin. But English influence in Ireland remains small and patchy.
