Thomas Cromwell beheaded

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Thomas Cromwell is executed after he falls from royal favour because of Henry VIII's failed marriage to Anne of Cleves. Hoping to further a pro-Protestant international policy, Cromwell persuades the king to marry Anne, a German Protestant noblewoman. Henry is reluctant and the marriage is unconsummated. Furious, Henry blames Cromwell, pensions off Anne and marries his fifth wife, Catherine Howard.
