17 November 1534
Parliament passes the Act of Supremacy that confirms the right of the king to be 'supreme head' of the Church of England instead of the pope, who Roman Catholics believe is the head of the Church. This enables Henry VIII to ignore the pope's refusal to allow him to remarry. The title of 'supreme head' was abolished by the Catholic Mary I in 1554, but under Elizabeth I it was revived as the title 'supreme governor', which was a compromise to allow some Catholics to accept the Anglican Church. |
