18 October 1529
Cardinal Wolsey falls from power because he fails to secure an annulment of Henry VIII's marriage to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, who hasn't produced a male heir after 18 years of marriage. Henry sees this as a judgement of God because Catherine had, on 14 November 1501, previously married his brother Arthur and then after Arthur's death married Henry. Wolsey is unable to persuade the pope, Clement VII, to grant Henry an annulment. He retires to York, and is subsequently accused of treason for accepting papal authority rather than the king's. |
