Henry made 'Defender of the Faith'

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Pope Leo X confers the title of Fidei Defensor ('Defender of the Faith') on Henry VIII after he is presented with the king's Assertio Septem Sacramentorum ('Defence of the Seven Sacraments'). This theological tract argues in defence of the Roman Catholic Church against the Protestant reformer Martin Luther, who is attacking Rome. The initials FD still appear on British coins.
