9 September 1513
James IV of Scotland and most of his nobles die at the battle of Flodden. While Henry VIII is fighting the French, his brother-in-law James IV sides with Scotland's traditional ally and declares war on England. The Scots cross the Tweed at Coldstream and occupy four castles on the way. They meet the English army on Branxton Hill, near Flodden, Berwick. Desperate hand-to-hand combat ensues, and the Scots sustain their worst defeat ever. James's son becomes James V of Scotland at the age of 18 months. |
