John Cabot returns

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

The Italian John Cabot, sponsored by Henry VII, returns to Bristol after a voyage of exploration to Cape Breton, Newfoundland. His successful Atlantic crossing follows his first attempt in 1496, when he and his son Sebastian are driven back by poor weather. In 1498, John Cabot and his fleet of five ships set out again but never return. The following year, Sebastian Cabot leads a successful expedition that explores the North American coast from Labrador to the Grand Banks off the Carolinas.
