Henry VII marries Elizabeth of York

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Henry VII consolidates his claim on the English throne by marrying Elizabeth of York, daughter of the Yorkist king Edward IV, who died in 1483. This marks the end of the series of bitter conflicts known collectively as the Wars of the Roses, in which the rival noble families of Lancaster (red rose badge) and York (white rose badge) fight for the crown. Henry consolidates his power by getting rid of nobles' private armies.
