22 March 1406
Prince James, the future James I of Scotland, is captured by the English while sailing to France to escape the civil war in his country. He inherits the throne on 4 April, but remains in English hands for 18 years, learning how royal government works and joining the English side in the Hundred Years War (see 24 May 1337) against France. In captivity, he writes The Kingis Quair and returns as king to Scotland in 1424 after being ransomed for £40,000. |
