Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

When John of Gaunt dies at the beginning of 1399, his nephew Richard II seizes his vast lands. This prompts Gaunt's son, Henry Bolingbroke, to claim the throne for himself while Richard is away in Ireland. After surrendering at Conwy, Richard is imprisoned in the Tower of London and is eventually persuaded to abdicate. Bolingbroke becomes king as Henry IV.
