24 June 1340
The English defeat the French at sea in the battle of Sluys and follow up with land victories at Crécy in 1346 and Poitiers in 1356, where the French king Philip VI is captured. When the town of Reims holds out against Edward III, an agreement is reached that leaves him with an enlarged duchy of Gascony. In return, he gives up his claim to the French throne. |
