French sack Southampton

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

The French king, Philip VI, launches raids against England, starting with Southampton on a Sunday morning while people are at Mass. The chronicler Froissart reports: 'They pillaged and looted, killing many people and raping a number of women.' Matters worsen when Edward III proclaims himself king of France: he is the grandson, through his mother, of Philip IV.
