Edward II becomes king

One of Edward II's first acts as king is to recall his court favourite and reputed lover, a Gascon knight called Piers Gaveston, whom his father had exiled a few months earlier. He confers on Gaveston the title of earl of Cornwall, which was usually only given to royal princes.
