11 December 1282
Llywelyn ap Gruffudd killed

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

When Llywelyn ap Gruffudd is killed in battle in 1282 near Builth, opposition to Edward I's invasion of Wales caves in. By the time of the prince's death, Edward's massive army has stripped him of all his lands except for Gwynedd. Castles – 'the magnificent badges of our subjection', according to the Welsh – are built along the border and the coast. The Statute of Wales in 1284 places a much smaller Wales under the direct jurisdiction of England.
