2 August 1274
When Henry III dies in 1272, Edward remains crusading in Palestine until 1274 so his coronation has to wait until he returns. He proves to be a ruthless monarch. He isn't impressed by the Treaty of Montgomery, for example, and summons Llywelyn ap Gruffudd to pledge his loyalty. But Llywelyn claims that his enemies have been given refuge in England in violation of the treaty. |
