21 May 1216
Prince Louis of France lands at Sandwich in Kent in a bid to take the English crown, which is offered to him by rebel nobles who are fed up with King John's refusal to abide by Magna Carta (see 19 June 1215). When Louis reaches London, John retreats and the nobles including the Scottish king, Alexander II pay homage. But, when John dies later in the year, they switch allegiance to his young son Henry. Louis loses battles at Lincoln and Sandwich and withdraws his forces in September 1217. |
