8 April 1141
When Stephen is captured after the battle of Lincoln, Matilda is named queen at Winchester but she is never crowned. The worst excesses of the civil war occur in 1141: towns are plundered and castles besieged, and prominent families swap sides for money or favours. But Stephen is reinstated on 7 December after Matilda's high-handed manner alienates many of her potential supporters. She later flees to France. |
