8 April 1141
Matilda named queen

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

When Stephen is captured after the battle of Lincoln, Matilda is named queen at Winchester – but she is never crowned. The worst excesses of the civil war occur in 1141: towns are plundered and castles besieged, and prominent families swap sides for money or favours. But Stephen is reinstated on 7 December after Matilda's high-handed manner alienates many of her potential supporters. She later flees to France.
