Stephen is crowned

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Although Henry I wants his daughter Matilda, his only surviving legitimate child, to succeed him, his nephew Stephen of Blois is first off the mark and his right to the throne is confirmed by the pope – with back-up from nobles who don't want to be ruled by a woman. But Stephen has a formidable enemy in Matilda's illegitimate half-brother Robert, earl of Gloucester. By 1139, there is anarchy as rival nobles slug it out.
