15 August 1100
Henry I crowned

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

On learning of William II's death, his younger brother Henry I acts immediately to secure the kingdom for himself by seizing the Treasury – an absolute must for any medieval king. Robert, duke of Normandy (see 9 September 1087), lands at Portsmouth the following year, with support from leading nobles, but his claim is bought off by Henry, who is backed by the Church. As a result of the battle of Tinchebrai in 1106, the kingdoms of England and Normandy are reunited and Robert is taken prisoner.
