9 September 1087
William I's favourite and most dutiful son, William Rufus, is his preferred heir over his older brother, Robert. In the family seat of Normandy, the custom of primogeniture means that Robert becomes duke of Normandy. But this custom is sidestepped when it comes to conquered lands, such as England. William prefers to give England to William because Robert has quarrelled with his father. Robert decides not to contest the decision at this stage (see 5 August 1100). |
