2 June 1070
Hereward, an Anglo-Saxon aristocrat, later known as 'the Wake' (meaning a watchful person), loots Peterborough Abbey for funds while leading a revolt against Norman rule. His power base is Ely in East Anglia, and he takes advantage of the fact that the boggy fenlands are unsuitable for castle building. A year later, Norman troops force him to flee and go into hiding. His is the last Anglo-Saxon rising against William I. |
