Rome's millennium

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

The 1,000th anniversary of the founding of Rome is celebrated with a spectacular series of games organised by the emperor Philip the Arab. But they cannot disguise the increasing pressure on Rome's frontiers, not least from the Goths, who first crossed the Danube to raid Roman provinces in the Balkans in AD 238. The very year of Rome's millennium sees fresh attacks by them, and they move deeper and deeper into the territory of the empire. Philip the Arab is killed in battle during a rebellion led by Decius, who succeeds him as emperor.
