The emperor Caracalla is dead, assassinated by an officer in his own bodyguard. The commander of the Praetorian Guard, Macrinus, one of the plotters against him, succeeds him. Although Caracalla's reign will be remembered most for its bloodshed, he also leaves Rome one of its most famous monuments: the Thermae antoninianae or Baths of Caracalla. The dome of its caldarium its hot room is almost as big as that of the Pantheon. Macrinus himself is killed the following year. |
