AD 215
Having murdered his own brother (in the presence of their mother), the emperor Caracalla launches a frenzy of killing of real and perceived enemies. It is estimated that some 20,000 people die on his orders during the first part of AD 212. Caracalla then leaves Rome, first for the Rhine and subsequently making his way through the Middle East to Alexandria. Here, in the empire's second biggest city, he is responsible for the massacre of thousands of young men by his troops; the reason for the slaughter is not known. |
