AD 142
Early in his reign, Antoninus takes the decision to conquer southern Scotland. The legions abandon the existing frontier at Hadrian's Wall and advance 40 miles north, where they build a new turf wall the Antonine Wall across the Forth-Clyde isthmus. The conquest does not last for long, however: by the end of Antoninus's reign, the frontier has moved back again to Hadrian's Wall. |
