AD 142
Invasion of Scotland

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Early in his reign, Antoninus takes the decision to conquer southern Scotland. The legions abandon the existing frontier at Hadrian's Wall and advance 40 miles north, where they build a new turf wall – the Antonine Wall – across the Forth-Clyde isthmus. The conquest does not last for long, however: by the end of Antoninus's reign, the frontier has moved back again to Hadrian's Wall.
