AD 122
Hadrian, who succeeds his close friend Trajan as emperor on his death in AD 117, likes to think of himself as a cultured scholar as much as a military leader. But his 20-year rule is remembered most for his consolidation of the empire within the natural borders delineated by Augustus the rivers Rhine, Danube and Euphrates. So he draws the Roman legions back from Armenia and Mesopotamia and builds the 80-mile-long Hadrian's Wall to separate the 'barbarians' from areas of Roman occupation in Britain. |
