Trajan's column dedicated in Rome

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Trajan's column, which stands in his forum in Rome (dedicated a year earlier), tells the story of the Dacian Wars (AD 101-102 and 105-106) in a spiral frieze rising from the bottom to the top of this impressive 30-metre (98-foot) column. Trajan's building programme matches his military successes, especially after the second Dacian War, when he is able to use the proceeds of conquest to finance projects such as the Trajan forum and market, the Baths of Trajan, a new amphitheatre capable of staging great sea battles and the Aqua Traiana, a new aqueduct. As well as other buildings throughout the empire, he also constructs a new harbour and canal at Ostia and a bridge across the river Danube.
