8 September AD 70
The Jewish revolt against Roman rule, which began four years earlier, has been crushed. The city of Jerusalem has been virtually destroyed, and with it the Jewish Temple. Jerusalem held out against the besieging forces for two years. Now there is only the desert fortress of Masada holding out against Roman forces led by Vespasian's son Titus, the future emperor. Its futile resistance against impossible odds will become the stuff of future Jewish legend. |
