AD 68–69
The year of four emperors

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Nero's death is followed by a year during which four emperors attain the throne in quick succession. None of the first three – Galba, Otho and Vitellius – manage to secure sufficient support to consolidate their power. Eventually Vespasian takes control. A soldier who has made his reputation through his forceful actions against a Jewish revolt in Palestine, which began in AD 66, he rules for 10 years of relative stability before being succeeded by his sons, first Titus and then Domitian.
