AD 43
Invasion of Britain

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Almost a century after Julius Caesar first landed Roman troops in southern England in 55 BC, and three years after Caligula assembled an invasion force that collected seashells, Claudius launches a successful invasion of Britain. The island will never be fully conquered, however, and later emperors consolidate their rule behind, first, the Antonine Wall and, later, Hadrian's Wall in the north, while Wales also remains largely untouched. Much of England will eventually be pacified, but not before large-scale revolts, such as that led by Boudica in AD 60-61, have had to be suppressed.

'I had men and horses, arms and wealth. What wonder if I parted with them reluctantly? If you Romans choose to lord it over the world, does it follow that the world is to accept slavery?'
British king Caratacus, quoted by Tacitus
