18 October AD 31
Sejanus, the commander of the Praetorian Guard and newly appointed consul, is murdered on the emperor Tiberius's orders by Naevius Sutorius Macro, who takes over his command. Sejanus has ruled Rome with a rod of iron since Tiberius's self-imposed withdrawal to the island of Capri in AD 26, and is associated with various plots and murders, including that of Tiberius's own son Drusus. Tiberius is finally persuade to act against him when he receives a letter from his sister-in-law, Antonia, warning him that Sejanus will not stop until he has made himself emperor. The hunting down and murder of Sejanus's supporters organised by Macro matches any terror that Sejanus inflicted on Rome. |
