19 August AD 14
Augustus dies, Tiberius emperor

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Augustus is taken ill while visiting Capri with his stepson Tiberius and dies a few days later, just short of his 76th birthday. Augustus has presided over the end of Republican government in Rome, established the new institution of emperor and brought stability and peace to the empire. He has no children by his long-term wife Livia Drusilla, and virtually all his potential heirs born to Julia, his daughter from an earlier marriage, have died young (some say poisoned by Livia). Livia's son, Tiberius, whom Augustus adopted in AD 4, is his somewhat reluctant heir. He is 54 when he succeeds Augustus as emperor.
