15 March 44 BC
Julius Caesar assassinated

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Beware the Ides of March. Julius Caesar's rule as dictator comes to an end when he is assassinated by opponents of his absolute rule, who seek a return to republican government by the Senate. The assassins, led by Cassius and Brutus, face retribution from the Triumvirate formed to oppose them: the generals Lepidus, Mark Antony and Octavian, Caesar's great nephew whom he has named as his adopted son in his will. Cassius and Brutus are defeated in the civil war that follows, after which (in 40 BC) the empire is divided into three. Mark Antony rules in the east and Octavian in the west, with Lepidus taking the province of Africa. However, Mark Antony's alliance with Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt, leads to further civil war until his defeat at the battle of Actium in 31 BC.
