Dwight D Eisenhower
Nancy Duin
Dwight D ‘Ike’ Eisenhower was born in obscurity, spent a large proportion of his army career in relatively low-level, administrative posts and then, almost miraculously, became a great wartime leader and a two-term president of the United States.
This website charts Eisenhower’s early life and dramatic rise, and attempts to explain why, at the age of 50, his merits were recognised and he began to grasp his chances. It also looks at how this career soldier and innately conservative politician presciently warned against the coming together of the armed forces and big business.
