More

Anil Gupta is the producer of Goodness Gracious Me, a BBC radio and TV comedy show (1996-98) that satirised British Asians. Its catch phrases, such as ‘Kiss my chuddies’ (underpants), have entered the cultural mainstream, and the show’s performers – Meera Syal, Nina Wadiia, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Kulvinder Ghir – have become familiar faces. Today Britain’s Asian population numbers over 1.5 million, and over the past 40 years, a young, highly motivated Asian middle class has emerged in areas, such as west London, that were once almost exclusively white. In the West Midlands, minority ethnic-owned clothing companies have played a key role in the survival of the British clothes manufacturing industry. In 2000, you were seven times more likely to be a millionaire if your name was Patel than if it was Smith – although there are 10 Smiths to every Patel.
