The class quiz

More

This phrase emphasises the way that, in the past, when the British social structure was rigid and aspirations for upward mobility limited, working-class people accepted their lot. It is also the punchline of the classic ‘Upper-middle-lower class’ sketch, written by Marty Feldman and John Law and performed on the BBC-TV programme The Frost Report (1966-7) by comedians John Cleese, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. The tall Cleese, representing the upper class, says that he looks down on the two Ronnies, who represent the middle and working classes. Barker says, ‘I look up to him [Cleese] because he is upper class and look down on him [Corbett] because he is lower class.’ The tiny Corbett just says: ‘I know my place.’
