David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was a novelist and poet, whose works include Women in Love (1920) and Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928). He was a highly controversial writer, especially his treatment of sexual relations. His light 1929 poem, ‘How Beastly the Bourgeois Is’, ridicules conservative middle-class men, whom he saw as repressed and repressive. In the first half of the 20th century, many artistically inclined rebels from the same class were also sexual outlaws, offending against the traditional moral standards of the bourgeoisie. As the poet W H Auden (1907-73) once wrote:

To the man-in-the-street, who, I’m sorry to say, is a keen observer of life,
The word Intellectual suggests straight away a man who’s untrue to his wife.
