George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was an Irish-born British dramatist, whose plays include Pygmalion (1913), which was later turned into the musical My Fair Lady. He won the Nobel prize for literature in 1925. A freethinker and supporter of women’s rights, he was also a socialist and deeply critical of traditional upper-class values. In Pygmalion, for example, a flower girl is given elocution lessons and successfully becomes a lady, thus overturning the belief that you can only be born an aristocrat. The guillotine was used by extremists during the French Revolution (1789-95) to behead many aristocrats.
