John Kenneth Galbraith (1908-2004) was a US economist, whose 1958 book The Affluent Society attacked the American dream of consumer spending, criticising the US for being a country rich in private resources but poor in public ones. A liberal intellectual, Galbraith was acutely conscious of social inequality and of the need to base a criticism of the rich on a sound intellectual basis. Despite this, the growth of celebrity culture in the past 25 years has arguably meant that the very rich are more ‘noticed’ than ever.
