Excellent overview of the conflict featuring a detailed timeline, numerous profiles, primary documents, battlefield analysis plus audio and video files. The homepage contains regularly updated features.

Spartacus Encyclopaedia of the First World War

Spartacus offers good information on a wide range of historical topics aimed mainly at 5 to 18-year-olds but also of strong interest to adults. Its Encyclopaedia of the First World War contains profiles of combatant states, key player biographies, analyses of major offensives and a helpful chronology.

The National Archive

The National Archives spans 1,000 years of British history. It consists of two parts, both of which have their own websites (accessible from the National Archives homepage): the Historical Manuscripts Commission and the Public Record Office (PRO). The PRO's collection of First World War resource material includes war diaries, orders of battle, war maps, medical records, medal rolls and information on soldiers killed in the war. There is also an excellent and extensive online exhibition devoted to World War I.

The Heritage of the Great War: An unorthodox website

A genuinely thought-provoking website that is dedicated to the events and consequences of World War I. Contains lots of challenging images including some quite harrowing ones of death and destruction.

The First World War: Nation by nation

The First World War wasn't just a struggle between Britain, France and Germany in the mud of Flanders. This site reminds us of the war's global dimensions by hosting profiles of all of the combatant states, including lesser powers such as Brazil, and Haiti. Some of the site's pages are still under construction.

Imperial War Museum

Britain's premier museum devoted to military matters from 1900 onwards. Type 'First World War' or 'World War I' into the homepage search option and enjoy the great diversity of material offered.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission marks and maintains the graves of members of Commonwealth forces who died in the two world wars, builds and maintains memorials to the unknown dead, and provides records and registers of these burials and commemorations. The homepage search facility offers a useful means for obtaining information on anyone who may have died in the Great War.

The Aerodrome: Aces and aircraft of World War I

If your main interest is the war in the air, this is probably the best place to start. Features concise biographies of all the top aces, plus details of the combat aircraft they flew.

Great site if you're interested in surface warship battles between the Royal Navy and the Imperial German Navy. Contains features on the battles of Jutland, Dogger Bank, Coronel and the Falklands among others.

Shot at Dawn

This website was established to support the attempt to win pardons for all the British and Commonwealth troops executed for cowardice and desertion during the war. The individual case studies are extremely poignant, and the site also examines the policies and behaviour of other combatant states in this highly contentious area.

Art of the First World War

The war influenced the way in which artists viewed the world. To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the war's end in 1998, the builders of this site drew together 100 paintings from international collections. There are also profiles of the artists who created the featured works. .
