The First World War

MONTENEGRO

Entered War : 7 August 1914 (declared war on Austria-Hungary)

Political system : Independent kingdom (with close ties to Serbia)

Leader : Nikola I: sovereign, 1910-18

Population : 500,000 (1914)

Army : 40,000 men (1914)

Recent Diplomacy : Montenegro joined Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria in a war against Turkey in 1912. Involvement in this Balkan War reinforced Montenegro's sense of independence from the Ottoman empire (Turkey). When the World War I began in 1914, the Montenegrin army fought with the Serbs against Austria-Hungary on the Balkan Front.

Casualties by 1918 : 3,000 dead, 10,000 wounded
