Programme 5: Slimming Drill

In a last ditch attempt to get the dieters to embrace personal discipline, the army's been called in. The term 'keep fit' originally meant 'fit for military purpose', from which all exercise routines originate. For the men there are military training exercises. For the women, a work out with the Women's League of Health and Beauty.

Sir Roy also urges the dieters to consider the wider implications of being overweight. "People who are overweight are not only a burden to their families," he says, "they are a burden to society. One hundred years ago, before we had a welfare state, people made it their civic duty to keep themselves fit."

By imposing military rule, Sir Roy hopes the residents will learn to value self discipline and collective responsibility. Not everyone's happy, but Dave Jordan shows signs of improvement and Vaughan and Sophie both rise to the challenge.
