Top of Silver Staircase

The first floor of Manderston contains the family bedrooms, and is particularly grand even for its time. The wide corridors, classical columns and arched bedroom doors are unusual touches to an area of the house normally left plain.

If a housemaid is found cleaning here when a member of the family comes past, she is expected to make herself as invisible as possible in order to prevent the family member being embarrassed by having to acknowledge her presence. And as that silver staircase takes some cleaning, this often happens in The Edwardian Country House.
