Archaelogical evidence
Before the excavations at Threave in the 1970s, the prevailing view
of the castle was of a mighty tower house standing in splendid isolation
on its island - 'a tower and nothing but a tower'
But the excavations found the foundations of two substantial structures
of fourteenth century date - evidence of extra accommodation around
the tower house.
Furthermore, artefacts recovered from the harbour mud at Threave shed
light on castle life during the time of Archibald 'the Grim' - a fine
collection of wooden bowls and plates, bearing the Douglas 'heart'
on their bases, as well as leather goods and jewellery.
