1566 William Forbes born


William Forbes, builder of Craigievar, born in the same year as James VI of Scotland.

1567 James becomes King of Scotland


James accedes to the Scottish throne as a child after the execution of his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots, brings her disastrous reign to an end.

1590s James's reign sees less feuding


James's rule as an adult king sees big improvements in Scotland, especially a reduction in the levels of feuding between nobles.

1603 William Forbes marries Margaret Woodward


William Forbes marries Margaret Woodward, daughter of the Lord Provost of Edinburgh.

1610 Construction of Craigievar begins


William, having acquired his fortune and his nickname Danzig Willie, begins construction of Craigievar.

1625 James dies


King James VI and I dies, and is succeeded by his son, Charles I.

1626 Craigievar completed


Craigievar completed. The ornamental plasterwork on the ceiling in the castle hall bears this date.

1627 William Forbes dies


William Forbes dies.

1824 Repairs and alterations


John Smith, a celebrated Aberdeen architect, is contracted to make repairs and alterations to the castle, including a new roof and enlargement of windows in the hall.

1879 and 1896 Royal visits


Queen Victoria visits the castle.

1965


The castle is bought by the National Trust for Scotland.
