The 'Licence to Crenellate'

In 1385 Sir Edward Dallingridge received a 'licence to crenellate' from the king, allowing him to build a castle at his manor of Bodiam.

A copy of the licence can be found in the Public Record Office in Kew.

The transcript from the Voiceover on the Video used :

"It says, 'King to all those who see this licence, greeting. Know ye that we have given and granted to our dear and beloved Edwardo Dalynrigge, Chevalier, (Edward Dallingridge, Knight), that he may strengthen with a wall of stone and lime his manor house of (Bodiam), Bodyham and that the castle is built' says the king in defensionem patrie (in defence of the country) against the king's enemies'. The licence itself though doesn't survive because the Dallingridges don't survive, so none of their documents do, but it would have looked something like this."
